About Union EMS

Union Emergency Medical Services is the primary provider of emergency and non-emergency ambulance service for the geographic boundaries of Union County, North Carolina.

Union EMS operates as a paramedic-level ambulance service providing advanced life support capabilities with every response.  Paramedic staffed ambulances and Quick Response Vehicles are strategically located throughout Union County to enhance our ability to respond timely to the growing requests for our services.

Established in 1985 as a full department of Union County Government, Union EMS has undergone constant change and made exceptional progress while serving the EMS needs of Union County for over twenty years.

In 1997, Union County Government entered into an agreement with the Carolinas HealthCare System for the management of emergency medical services resulting in more effective and efficient operation of EMS in Union County.

Union EMS is licensed by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services as a State-Approved ambulance provider and all EMTs and Paramedics are credentialed by the State of North Carolina.

Approximately one-half of our system's paramedics have exceeded the state's standards by meeting the requirements for recognition as Nationally Registered EMT-Paramedics - another attestation to the high level of dedication our personnel have to the citizens of Union County.

Employees:  Union EMS has 78 full time positions and 35 part time (PRN) positions.

The Union EMS AdministrativeTeam consists of the EMS Director, Operations Manager, Training Officer, and the EMS Office Coordinator who work a traditional 40-hour work week.

Physician oversight and medical control is provided through contractual arrangements with a physican who is board certified in Emergency Medicine.  In additon to spending time with EMS personnel at the bases and on calls, reviewing protocols, conducting oral boards and quality management functions, our medical director works as a physician seeing patients in Emergency Departments across the two Carolinas.

The Operations Manager and Training Officer, who report to the EMS Director, head the two major functional areas of EMS respectively - Operations and Training.

The Operations Division consists of the Operations Manager, Shift Supervisors, Assistant Shift Supervisors, Paramedics, and EMTs who make up the three rotating shifts and the prime-time personnel necessary to maintain the ambulance service on a 24/7 basis.

Each of the three 24-hour shifts consists of a Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor and the 20 Paramedics required to staff our nine ambulances and four Quick Response Vehicles.

Eight additional Paramedics work a prime-time schedule to keep the 10th and 11th ambulances in-service during peak times seven days per week.

Our Training and Education Division consists of the Training Officer and six Paramedics who also function as Field Training Officers (FTOs).  The FTOs work as paramedics on the ambulances and are tasked with additional duties related to quality improvement, skills maintenance, continuing education, peer review audits, and clinical research for protocol development.  This structure assures that all personnel are always qualified, highly skilled, and ready to respond to the next call for assistance.

Union County covers a land mass of 637 square miles and the population estimate on July 1, 2008 was 193,255.  Union County has the distinction of being the fastest growing county in North Carolina and the 13th fastest growing county in the nation.
